About NZMMAF

The New Zealand Mixed Martial Arts Federation (NZMMAF) is the recognised National Sporting Organisation for Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) in Aotearoa New Zealand. Our mission is to foster the development, safety, and sustainability of MMA through regulation, accreditation, and community-building.

We serve athletes, coaches, officials, and clubs by providing national pathways, regulatory guidance, and international opportunities. From grassroots to global stages, NZMMAF supports the growth of MMA in New Zealand through good governance, strong partnerships, and strategic leadership.

2016

Recognised by Sport New Zealand as the National Sporting Organisation (NSO) for Mixed Martial Arts in Aotearoa New Zealand.

2018–2022

Represented New Zealand on the global amateur MMA stage through IMMAF affiliation.

  • Senior National Team ranked #5 globally out of 77 countries
  • Senior Men's Team ranked #7 globally out of 900
  • Middleweight division ranked #1 in the world
  • Michelle Montague: Gold (2018, 2022), Silver (2021), Bronze (2019)
  • Gase Sanita: Gold, named IMMAF Fighter of the Year
  • New Zealand athletes ranked in the Top 10 across 10 different divisions
  • The only country to win gold in consecutive years

2020

Supported UFC Auckland by facilitating a pōwhiri with Ngāti Whātua Ōrākei – a landmark moment that set a global example for cultural acknowledgment in MMA.

2023

Initiated a comprehensive strategic review focused on:

  • Improving governance and regulatory frameworks
  • Rebuilding national coordination across the MMA community
  • Reconnecting with domestic members and affiliates

2024

Finalised the strategic plan and began implementation.

  • Expanded affiliate and stakeholder engagement
  • Formed global commercial and regulatory partnerships
  • Strengthened public and government communication channels

2025

Continued transition into operational delivery.

  • Preparing to launch the National Accreditation Framework
  • Commenced law reform efforts, including a review of the Boxing and Wrestling Act 1981
  • Invested in regulatory capability and integrity infrastructure
